Gold Nugget Tips of LinkedIn and Applying for Jobs Online | “Yikes!” Presentation Part 3
Here is the third part of the presentation of my book “Yikes! I’ve Got to Get a Job” with careerusa.org and careerdfw.org. Previously, I have shared more extensively about optimizing the resume in the best way with keywords for the job you apply for, with examples! See it here. This chapter covers step 3 which is about LinkedIn & Applying Online:
Applying Online:
Apply online only when it’s absolutely mandatory or there’s a target account, target opportunity, and a company that you want to work at. Take the time to do that; you’re better off trying to get networked and have somebody take the resume into somebody within the organization.
AI filters are designed to filter people out versus filter people in. The keyword match is crucial. If, by the way, you ever email or text your resume, make sure you’re sending it as a PDF, which freezes the registration of it. Sending it as a Word doc can get open up and be a jumbled mess, very unprofessional. You have that one chance to make a first impression, and, in my opinion, you do yourself a disservice when you don’t take the time to send it as a PDF. It’s an easy thing to do on your computer; just save as and go down and find PDF, and you get a snapshot out of it.
LinkedIn and Online Presence:
Typically, for LinkedIn photos, the one on the left is poorly lit. Avoid group photos and no red Solo cups. These are just some things I grabbed off the internet real fast. That’s my photo; my wife took that photo here in the house for the book, and it’s funny that was like the second photo we took. We did about 50, and that second photo just worked out great!
My website is sponsored by Timkin, but I do kind of promote that I do this thing on helping others, and the book is there in the background. Just a crisp summary of what you do; you don’t have to go too detailed, but you can hang out examples of your work if you have permission or clearance to put stuff online. For publicly traded private companies, it’s a function of those experiences, how much dollars and how much detail on the dollars. You could add a little bit of color with numbers and things. I don’t do it on LinkedIn; I leave that on the resume, to be honest with you.
A professional-looking website helps. When applying online, don’t get caught up in the time trap. Just keep researching and finding good opportunities for you. We talked about the tracking software that filters you out; there’s jobscan.com. Another thing, if you can avoid putting a salary value when you apply or talk about a salary, it’s best. If you do, put in “Market” or “Negotiable” if the system allows you to put something other than a value in there because you don’t want to price yourself out, and you don’t want to leave money on the table.
Most systems now are asking for a value, just be brutally honest, understand your finances, your budget, and what you’ll be able to do. Then when you get the offer, make sure you understand the full benefits package and all the benefits the company can offer.
About “Yikes! I’ve Got to Get a Job”…
Matt helped more than 200 people over more than 20 years. This has become his avocation. He wrote “Yikes!” because he learned about several areas that trip people up in job search. These lead to negative outcomes due to steep learning curves.
Matt researched and found there is limitless free and fragmented information, but no “linear process” as to how to manage and execute a job search. That motivated him to write “Yikes! I’ve Got to Get a Job”. Gainfully employed today, Matt continues to help people better prepare and manage their job search.
